MAGALLANES WASTE ‘TIANGGE’, A SUCCESS
By Dinjo Constantino
THE first-ever recyclables waste market to be hosted and held at a barangay was a success as many villagers and residents from the different parts of the city trooped to Barangay Magallanes to witness the special “tiangge”.
In cooperation with the Ayala Property Management Inc., the Department of Environment and Natural Resources(DENR) and the Makati DES Office for Solid Waste Management, the recyclables market featured selling and trading of items such as paper, PET bottles, metal, old cellular phones, old batteries, used air-conditioners, used television sets, gas stoves and refrigerators.
Determined to influence the other barangays to take similar steps, Barangay Magallanes was brave enough to undertake the program.
According to Kagawad Nico Garcia, also the chairman on the committee of environment, some 84 sellers even had to take more than two trips to gather their items for selling and trading.
Present during the event were Barangay Magallanes Captain Rey Marquez, kagawad Marilou Gordon, Makati DES Office for Solid Waste Management head Danilo Villas, Magallanes Parish Priest and environment advocate Fr. Benny Tuazon and Nico Garcia, who acted as the host for the special day.
The kagawad also thanked and congratulated all barangay personnel who made the event as successful as it was and invited everyone again to participate in the next recylables market on April 4.
